Lunar New Year, Arctic animals books, 120 charts, 100th day of school, and the Field Trip!1/30/2020 Our counselor, Mrs.Hsu did a lesson on the Lunar New Year and the students made lanterns. We also enjoyed an amazing presentation by one of our students. She even brought red envelopes and treats to all of her classmates! We completed our Arctic Animals books. They loved sharing their facts about puffins, ermines, ptarmigans, beluga whales and seals! In Math, we've been ordering numbers. They worked in groups to cut up 120 charts and put them in order. 100th Day! The students enjoyed many fun activities and stations! I asked them if they had learned 100 things, and they wrote these sweet things on the board: Field Trip!

We had a lot of fun with some books about winter. The students created Inuit (Eskimo) dolls, and igloos! We had a crazy start to our week as our classroom lights were not working. We spent the morning doing our work in the Science Lab. We had a fun STEM activity --- building igloos! They were so proud when they finished! Camp Koski - Arctic Post Career Day was a lot of fun! Check out these future professions! The entire school enjoyed our assembly featuring a Jiu-Jitsu demonstration. Even Principal Dow got to show us some moves! The 1st grade classes were fortunate to meet some of our FBISD police officers, and their sweet K-9 police dog! Happy Lunar New Year & Happy Chinese New Year on January 25! It is the Year of the Rat. We enjoyed hearing about this student's family traditions. He even shared some special red envelopes with the class!
We have enjoyed some fun books in our winter unit. The students wrote about being trapped inside a snow globe, and made an acrostic poem about snow. The students learned about compound words, then created illustrations of these. They also learned about contractions and created them with cards. We took a little break each day to track the weather. We recorded our observations. We enjoyed an extension of our weather unit by doing a fun experiment (with the help of one of our awesome class parents). First, we guessed how many paper clips a cup of water would hold...much like the drops of water in a cloud. Then, we made the clouds rain with food coloring! We worked with skip counting in math. It was amazing to count collections of things. We did a little more practice with compound words. We had an exciting STEM activity after reading some winter weather books. The students worked in groups to build "marshmallow houses" that could withstand the force of a blizzard (my hair dryer). We actually had 2 groups that were successful! We did another experiment to explain how penguins survive in the icy waters of the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth (Antarctica). An emperor penguin is about the same size as an average first grader, so we had fun with a measuring activity. Our class flag was returned to us from Antarctica last week! The students were very excited to see it again.
