In math, we learned about using the < and > symbols to show greater than and less than. They used fruit loops to compare more or less and wrote sentences in their Math journals. This next picture is just called, "TAKE OUR PICTURE, MRS. KOSKI!!" They were using cubes to make long trains. One of my favorite books during our color unit is, The Colors of Us. Each student created a self-portrait after we discussed our different skin colors. I love these! We had some fun during our study of Objects in the Sky with this astronaut project.

We continued our focus on colors this week with some fun, engaging literature. Two of our favorites were Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Orange Splot. The students responded with these: In math, we learned how to use a number line. The students practiced with a friend. We completed our King and Queen writing unit. The students enjoyed sharing their books!
We've enjoyed so much wonderful literature related to colors. After reading Little Blue and Little Yellow, we did a paint experiment by combining the colors. It was fun! We have been sorting different groups of objects by attributes. Here are some groups trying to decide how to sort their aliens. We loved reading The Big Green Pocketbook. After discussing the story, each student made a pocketbook or briefcase, filled with pictures of their favorite things. It was a fun sharing experience. Then, it was time for Carrot Day! We started the day with a lively (and loud) presentation by Toro, the mascot of the Houston Texans. We then returned to our First Grade hallway to measure and compare our carrots. I enjoyed seeing many of you at our Spirit Night at Spring Creek Barbeque. Here are the selfies!
Highlands is fortunate to have a cart of iPads that we can check out on a rotating basis. Today we had an orientation, and the students were excited! But first, let us take a selfie! Red Day writing - based on Red WagonAfter reading this book, the students wrote about what they'd like to carry in their own red wagon. On "Yellow Day", we read a fun and interactive book called Press Here. Then the students showed us what their dots might do!
We continue to learn new routines and rules at school. This week we began rotating through our Daily Five centers. The students are learning how to increase their literacy skills while working cooperatively with other students. Here's a sorting activity we did with letters. We tried to determine if they had straight edges, curves, or both. We worked on ordering numbers by using giant cards!
