Last week we learned so much about pumpkins. We studied the life cycle and even observed a real pumpkin stalk, complete with the yellow flower and a baby pumpkin. We read a lot of entertaining fiction literature, too. We used our writing skills to make little non-fiction books about pumpkins. On Friday, we celebrated Pumpkin Day. We used our class pumpkin to estimate the seeds (we had 229), estimate the weight, circumference, and number of ribs (the vertical "lines" on a pumpkin). We carved a jack-o'-lantern, and felt the slimy seeds and pulp. We even sampled pumpkin seeds and pumpkin muffins! The students used their creative skills to decorate their mini-pumpkins. Here's a photo of some cool patterns we've been studying in math, too.

Red Ribbon Week was a fun and educational time at Highlands. We learned about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We also discussed bullying and ways you can stand up for what is right. Our big rally was on Friday. Our class made awesome signs to carry. We had some great singers and dancers as we pledged to be Drug Free. It was a great day!
We had a blast with our study of apples this week. We read some delightful literature, both fiction and non-fiction. We learned about the life cycle of the apple, and brainstormed a great list of all the delicious things to eat, made from apples. We tasted and compared apples (green was our class favorite), used the cores to make apple prints, and made applesauce from scratch (along with some tasty bread in the bread machine). Apples, apples, apples!
Every day, the students have an opportunity to practice math skills at Math Box time. Here you see them practicing "making ten" with eyeballs in the ten frames, building using geometric solid shapes, connecting cubes to divide into tens, and using giant cards to practice number skills.
Today we read Rosie's Walk, and learned about directional words. The students acted out some of them, and then wrote about our beloved Scottie taking a walk. They read their sentences to you, so listen closely! |
AuthorI am a retired First Grade teacher in Texas. I have two children, two daughters-in-law, a grandson and granddaughter. Our beloved pup, Rocco, went to heaven this year. He was 15 years old. I've been married 37 years. I would love to hear from any former students! Archives
