We had fun with this "green" book. It's a delightful story of a little girl who ran all kinds of errands with her mom and put her "souvenirs" into her pocketbook. We made our own versions of pocketbooks and briefcases, and had fun sharing pictures of our special things. Time to move on to Orange Day! This book described the house of Mr. Plumbean's dreams, so the students then made their own cool houses. For Purple Day, we read one of my favorites. I love love love this book and the beautiful illustrations. What do animals do when we are sleeping? They skate! It was so amusing to imagine the different animals up in the air. We wrapped up our unit on Objects in the Sky by creating astronauts and thinking about what we'd do if we landed on the moon. Check out their knowledge of man-made objects and natural objects on these space posters. What does Math look like in our class? Here are a few activities. Partner games with dice to order numbers. Using our "slider" dogs to learn how to use a number line. As we begin our Weather unit, we worked together to create this anchor chart of weather words. It looks amazing!

We had a very busy week in First Grade! We started our week with a videoconference with NASA at the Johnson Space Center. Our program, The Magnificent Sun, was terrific! The students were first asked to draw what they think the sun looks like. We had a little trouble with our videoconferencing unit, so we were able to use a webcam to communicate. Mr. Michael (at NASA) wanted to see what the students drew. We learned how all the colors of the rainbow can be associated with the sun. We also added details to our "scientific drawings" such as sun spots, solar flares, and solar wind. Our Spring Creek BBQ Spirit Night was a lot of fun! I enjoyed seeing you there! My whole family came and surprised me! My grandson loved the attention! We loved this book, Why is Blue Dog Blue? by George Rodrigue. The students then created their own versions. Aren't they beautiful? Carrot Day! We compared our carrots and declared winners for the longest, shortest, heaviest, and funniest-looking carrots. We then repeated this activity with winners from the other First Grade classes. It was exciting and fun! We made books about our carrots, and did some measuring activities. Our non-standard measurement with carrots included measuring each other! After all that excitement, it was time for a crazy picture. We ended our day with some dance time and the disco ball!
We began our Color Unit with reading some books focusing on red and yellow. The Red Wagon allowed the students to think of what they could do with one. The students had fun using their scientific senses to sort red things. They came up with some very good sorting rules! Acting out The Little Red Hen brought a lot of laughs. :) On Red Day, we got to meet a cool author, Chris Barton. In Science, we have learned so much about Objects in the Sky. We took a little time to draw our own constellations. There were squeals of delight when I turned on my "star machine" and they were mesmerized by the effect on the ceiling. We are having fun in First Grade! On Yellow Day, we read Press Here. It is a fun, interactive story with lots of action created by the reader. The students made their own versions and shared with friends. Look at the giggles! They loved it! Our second week of school was full of activity! We made some cool coconut name trees after reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Sorting buttons was a fun job. The students came up with some great sorting rules! Look how engaged they are! Another sorting activity was done with these "alien" cards. They were creative with their answers! Having time to explore Math Stations is one of our favorite parts of the day! After reading Elmer, they designed their own unique elephants. They also drew some clues about what they did on summer vacation.
