We finished up our money unit with a pretend "shopping" game. Each student used their bag of coins to "shop" for items on cards. They had a fun time! I was surprised this week with a visit from my son, Conrad. It cracked me up when all the kids ran over to him. It's easy to be a rock star when you visit First Grade! We spent this week working on some persuasive pop-up books. Each student chose a pet they'd like to have and gave reasons why. The final products were terrific.

It was a wild and crazy day for us in First Grade on Thursday. The students loved opening their valentines and spending the day with their classroom friends. Earlier in the day, I gave them free reign over the paper hearts to make valentines for family and friends. Some of them got very creative with the hearts, turning them into animals such as fish, birds, and dogs.
This week we began reading about Fairy Tale characters with The Missing Tarts. In it, the Queen of Hearts is busy looking for the missing tasty pastries that were stolen by the sneaky Knave. The students colored this giant mural and chose a character to create and add to the scene. Look closely and you will see Jack & Jill, Old King Cole, Old Mother Hubbard (and her dog), the Man in the Moon, Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Peep, Little Boy Blue and many more. I am so proud of their efforts! We also had a lot of fun creating magnificent silver and gold CASTLES! The students wrote about which character they'd like to have over and what they would do.
In class this week, we have been studying Dental Health. We learned a lot about proper hygiene and even took time to write to the Tooth Fairy. We had a "measurement lab" this week. The students measured many different objects, recording their observations. Some of them even measured each other! This week our campus celebrated "Digital Learning Day." In our classroom, we use technology in many different ways. They have especially enjoyed learning on the iPads. We learned so much in our videoconference this week with Ranger Emma in Glacier Bay, Alaska. She took us on a "virtual tour" by kayak to see glaciers and Arctic wildlife. We even saw actual skulls of a bear and a walrus. After we took the oath to share our knowledge, the students received their Junior Ranger badges! We had a blast with the 100th day of school. We spent most of the day rotating through special centers that challenged us with math, building, and writing activities. The students even got to make their snack with 100 pieces of their favorite snacks!

AuthorI am a retired First Grade teacher in Texas. I have two children, two daughters-in-law, a grandson and granddaughter. Our beloved pup, Rocco, went to heaven this year. He was 15 years old. I've been married 37 years. I would love to hear from any former students! Archives
