We've been learning about arachnids (spiders!). The students created these cool webs for their All About Spiders papers. We had fun making some creative spiders. We used our knowledge of 2-dimensional shapes to build new shapes with straws. They were so engaged doing this! Here's another math activity using Halloween erasers and q-tips to make tally marks. Check out my lovely Halloween costumes, designed by the students! Pumpkin Day was lots of fun! We did a lot of measuring activities. This little pumpkin had 366 seeds! We enjoyed trying pumpkin seeds and cookies, decorating pumpkins, and even playing pumpkin bingo.

We learned about some of our symbols of America. We used art to show our creativity. We really enjoyed our technology project, Monster Match. Another First Grade class made a "monster" and sent us a description. We tried to build theirs. We built one and they tried to do the same. We Skyped with their class this week to compare results. Both classes did very well! We made some sweet books this week about a favorite birthday. They had fun sharing their writing with each other. Here's a little peek at our class during Flashlight Friday reading time. They enjoy the novelty of reading by flashlight! We ended our week with the Red Ribbon Week rally. They made signs to show our commitment to be Drug Free, and to stand up to Bullies! To reinforce our study of Geometry and plane shapes, we did a "Shape Walk" with our iPads. Each team took photos of shapes in the real world.
Things were hopping this week in First Grade! We studied apples, tasted apples, used apples to make apple prints, then made our own delicious applesauce. We have been learning a lot about the seasons and made these posters. They were beautiful! We are doing a "Monster Match" with another First Grade classroom. We made a monster and sent them a written description to recreate it. They did the same. We can't show the picture yet, as we have a videoconference this week to share. We had fun putting it together! Thanks to everyone that contributed to our Fun Run fundraiser! The students had a warm morning to do their laps. Your donations earned the class a dance party and Game Day! Whew! What a week....
We enjoyed reading about clouds, then making our own puffy clouds. They were pretty creative! We have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the "chicks" in the library. It was exciting when they arrived this week! We've been learning about the parts of a sentence. They practiced with partners and wrote some terrific sentences! We ended the week with Reader's Choice Day. Each team chose their book, read it and discussed it together, and made their posters. They were so proud! I was very proud, too! Here's a big shout out and thanks to our PTO for the new reading loft in the library! The students are excited and ready to use it!
During our color unit, we begin by "brainstorming" things of that particular color. We started a few weeks ago with red, and ended the week with black. Take a look at our progress! With a little practice, we got more creative and thorough each day! We enjoyed reading Rosie's Walk about a carefree hen that escaped a fox. We acted out the story with our directional words, then made our own version, "Scottie's Walk." On Brown Day, we had a little fun, observing a "mystery mixture." The students used their scientific skills of observation to try to determine what it was. Our mixture just needed a little milk to determine it was chocolate pudding! In Science, we've been studying components of weather. Here is a look at the tornado in a bottle. We learned a lot about wind and its role in weather. The students were able to name many positive and negative things about the wind. We went outside to try the wind with our pinwheels. Happy Fall! Brown Day wouldn't be complete without reading this imaginative book that appreciates diversity in the colors of our skin. The students created their own self-portraits. Magnificent! Thank you to everyone that donated to our PTO Membership Drive! Third Grade won the honors to duct tape Mrs. Dow and Mrs. Bathe to the wall!
