Monday was our 100th day of school and we had quite a celebration! We did activities involving the number 100 and even had "100" glasses! Check out some of our neat stations.

We enjoyed learning about the Arctic last week. We read books about lots of different animals and discussed their adaptations that allow them to live successfully in the frigid Arctic weather. We learned how the Inuit and Inupiat people live and compared/contrasted their lives to ours. It is one of my favorite units!
As a culminating activity for our penguin unit, Mrs. Garvin helped us to organize our knowledge about penguins. We worked in groups to focus on Penguin Babies, What Penguins Can Do, Where Penguins Live, and What Penguins Look Like. Every student contributed artwork and a fact. We set it up in the hallway as a "walking museum" about penguins. Here are our museum posters. Look below for every student's contribution.
Ms. Karen, with the NASA Langley Research Center (Washington, DC) conducted a videoconference with our class today. We impressed her with our current knowledge of the sun and the solar system. She had the students first draw the sun as they imagined it to be. Then after an interesting discussion about what made a rainbow, she was able to direct the students to color the sun with different colors. We also added sunspots, solar flares, the corona, and some solar wind. As you can see from the photos, the students were highly engaged and interested!
Every student created a "penguin" after our unit study on Antarctica. They studied their attributes and features. In the hallway, we have quite a variety! Some of the penguins you might see are: emperor, macaroni, chinstrap, king, rockhopper, gentoo, adelie, and the little blue fairy.
We try to go to the computer lab weekly. Sometimes the students have a specific writing or math activity. This week we had some "free choice" time to explore the many educational websites. Remember, these are all linked for easy access to the Highlands library website, and our very own website, too! Just click EDUCATIONAL WEBSITES at the top header.
Today we did some super fun activities! Check them out below..... Well, one thing I guess you should know about me is that I am obsessed with snowmen! I love them. We did a painting and writing project today with snowmen and they turned out beautifully. They are on display in our hallway. :) Oh, and I'm pretty sure it was 78 degrees today. We can always d-r-e-a-m!
My daughter, Cami and her friends Morgan and Shelby came to visit today. They are all 3 college athletes (2 in soccer and one in softball). They spent some time helping the students, and Shelby read a few penguin books. Shelby is currently studying secondary education as her college major.
This afternoon we were treated to a performance by some Chinese Acrobats. They were very entertaining! Today we did some "blends" in phonics using word clouds from Wordle. We added a list of words that started with "fl", "st", etc. and Wordle jumbles the words into an interesting poster. We did 6 blends this way. I showed the students how to access Wordle off our web-site so they could make their own. They had fun with it!
