We started our fun day with a school-wide Sing-along in the cafeteria. The Koski Family has a holiday tradition of making a large gingerbread house. We've enjoyed it in the classroom this week, and then it will be delivered to the sick children at Texas Childrens Hospital. This is the 17th year we've done this! We took some funny photos around the house. Then it was time to watch The Polar Express! When the lights went out, it looked like this... Of course, we enjoyed hot cocoa! The First Grade elves had a busy day!
Our study of nocturnal animals included learning about owls. After making these stick owl puppets, and cute puppet stages, the students made interchangeable backgrounds, so their owls could have adventures in different settings. Activities like this focus on more than just fun...they are practicing their oral language, storytelling, sequencing and more! Our writing lessons this week focused on non-fiction text about nocturnal animals. The students enjoyed making these beautiful books. In math, we are learning about 2-dimensional shapes. We played "Shape-O" (a version of bingo) as a review of these shapes. Reindeer puppets!
In Science, we've been learning about natural resources and landforms. We used playdough to mold features like lakes, islands, mountains, and more. In our study of nocturnal animals, we observed an owl pellet. Owls eat mice, among other things, and the fur and bones that cannot be digested are spit up in the form of a pellet. It was interesting to see one!
