Last week we had an interesting time learning about pumpkins. We read some fun fiction books, but also learned about pumpkin life cycles. On Friday, we carved a jack-o-lantern, counted pumpkin seeds, and did a lot of measuring activities. We had time to taste pumpkin seeds, decorate our small pumpkins and even play pumpkin bingo. We also did some beautiful nighttime paintings featuring pumpkins.

Take a look at our little neighborhood! After our economics discussion about neighborhoods, wants and needs, and goods and services, we created a little neighborhood of our own. We learned about different kinds of jobs and what people do. Each student decided on a business. I see a lot of future entrepreneurs!
We had so much fun with our apple unit last week. We learned about the life cycle of an apple tree and what happens during each season. We tasted different kinds of apples and recorded and graphed our observations. We learned how to cut an apple to see the "star" in the middle and then used them with paint to make apple print pictures. Some might think the best part was making homemade applesauce yesterday!
We were fortunate to engage in a videoconference with NASA last week. Our session was called, "The Magnificent Sun." We knew that the sun was a source of heat and light for our planet, but we learned some new things, too. We first drew the sun as we imagined. After careful guiding by our NASA expert, we added different colors of the rainbow into our sun pictures, along with solar flares, sunspots and solar wind. We learned a lot! We have enjoyed all of the terrific literature with our color unit. They have served as a starting point for many skills we are learning including writing, creative response and questioning. Our last color day featured some beautiful rainbow stories. Each student responded with a watercolor painting. Aren't these pretty?
