We started Red Ribbon Week with a parade through the park. We had "Dress for Success" day, and "Dress like a Superhero" Day this week. This week we studied magnetism in Science. First, we went outside to explore compasses. Then, we had a fun magnet lab and tried all sorts of materials! It's Pumpkin Week! We tried pumpkin seeds. We carved our class pumpkin and counted the seeds. We made estimates about how many we thought it would have. They were surprised! Does a pumpkin float? Time to find out. We made pumpkin "lava" outside. Click on the video below. We decorated our "ghosts" and played pumpkin bingo.

It has been a spooky week with lots of learning about spiders! We did some non-fiction writing about spiders, and made these awesome creative spiders using adjectives. All week we worked on writing a book about a small moment in our lives. The students had so much fun sharing them! Some of the other first grade teachers invited our students to visit with our anchor chart and their books for a book reading. In Science, we continued our studies about forms of energy. We used our hands to melt ice to demonstrate heat energy, then observed a transfer of cold and hot water. Our music teacher let us borrow some instruments to experiment with vibrations from sound. The only directions for this activity: create something that makes sound. They had so much fun! We also had fun with some math and reading activities this week. Look below for some spider facts from our students! Apples Apples Apples! We enjoyed wonderful literature this week, did some apple activities and welcomed Fall! We enjoyed tasting different types and colors of apples and recording our observations. We used the apple cores as stampers to make apple prints. We brainstormed adjectives to describe apples. It was a group effort to get our apples and spices ready to cook. Time to eat! October is Fire Prevention Month. We asked some neighbors from Sugar Land Fire Station #3 to visit us. They did a wonderful job speaking about safety, and showing us the fire truck. We gave them a book of Fire Safety Rules created by the students. They loved it! They finished their visit with lights and a siren! Click below to play the video. We did a graphing activity about our favorite book of the week. What happened next is what teachers love! These students used their math box time to create their own surveys and graphs. Excellent! After a busy week, we enjoyed some extra recess on a beautiful Friday afternoon!
We have been practicing our doubles facts in math. It's fun to practice with a friend! In Science, we've been learning about matter and energy. We decided to walk around school and look for solids, liquids, and gases. Look at our young scientists recording their observations! In Social Studies, we learned about what makes a good citizen. These students are on the Wanted list! Wanted for good citizenship! One form of energy is light energy. We had fun with flashlights, and tested different materials to see if light would pass through them. Making shadows was fun, too! We learned about adjectives this week, and how to use them in a sentence. These young reading detectives wrote some great sentences with this new skill.
