We moved up to the Arctic this week! After reading Angela from the Arctic, the students made these Inupiat dolls. Since we couldn't have real snow, we had to settle for fake snow that we made. My favorite book about the Arctic is Mama, Do You Love Me? An Inuit girl asks her mom a lot of questions. We did a vocabulary matching game and then created our own igloos. We finished a writing activity about being trapped inside a snow globe or a sand globe. They had fun sharing their stories with a friend! In Social Studies, we have been studying geography and maps. I have a large collection of maps that we explored. It was fun finding places we've heard about! We played some fun math games this week, and constructed paper 3D solid shapes. We had a great Career Day this week. Below you will see a future writer, coach, fashion designer, and 2nd grade teacher! We attended various speakers including Grover "Deacon" Jones. He is a former baseball player for the Chicago White Sox and now a special assistant to the President of the Skeeters. Jones was the first African American recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY and also was inducted into four other Halls of Fame.

We had a fun week studying the land at the bottom of the globe. We made these adorable penguins to decorate the hallway. An Emperor penguin is about the size of a first grader. We did some measuring to compare the students to this approximate size. Our flag that flew with the Adelie penguins in Antarctica returned to us this week, along with the postcards we sent! We learned about compound words this week, and made some foldables of our own. We also learned how to make contractions. Our math lessons this week involved partner games. The students looked for pictures of 3D shapes in magazines. We acted out the water cycle to understand more about weather. This was a fun imaginative book that the students really enjoyed. We wrote creative stories that we will share later. This book also led us to a STEM activity. We built "marshmallow mansions" and tested their strength during a blizzard (the wind made from a hair dryer). These young engineers had some great designs!
Happy New Year! We made some goals/resolutions for the new year. Several students did the "writing challenge" over the holiday break and shared with the class. Everyone wrote about their break, and we did some peer editing. They helped each other correct their spelling, check for punctuation and capitals, and look for anything that did not make sense. In math this week, we worked on fractions and 3D solid shapes. We worked in teams with the iPads to look for 3D shapes in the real world. We read several rebus stories this week. A rebus story contains words /and/ pictures in a sentence. The students created some imaginative and creative stories and read them to each other. In science, we have been learning about weather. Each day we went outside to record our observations. We began studying penguins this week and were pleased to know that our class flag flew in ANTARCTICA with the Adelie penguins! Adelie penguins live in a very harsh environment on a continent that is 98% covered in ice, so we are sure they enjoyed seeing our flag! *All photo credits go to https://www.penguinscience.com/ Look in the distance - those are all Adelie penguins! We did an experiment using water on paper that had been colored with crayons. The waxy crayons helped to waterproof the paper just like a penguin's feathers are waterproof. We are ready for new ways to learn every day!
