Our artwork related to the study of China was amazing! We were ready for Festival Week. First, we had to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day. Thank you to the many students that brought in poems. We wore our handy pouches, and read poems throughout the day. Sharing things that came from China was interesting! The students wrote facts for our display board that was placed in the library. We explored tangrams: a Chinese geometric puzzle consisting of a square cut into seven pieces that can be arranged to make various other shapes. They loved making pictures and letters. We also tried doing beautiful Chinese calligraphy with paint. Using chopsticks is a little tricky, so we practiced transferring pom pom balls from one plate to another. Time for the Food Tasting Feast! They loved leaving their shoes in the hallway. We made beautiful lion masks and lanterns to carry in the parade. Let's go! The whole school had a wonderful sing-a-long, celebrating many cultures.

We began our study of China this week. We look forward to our Festival on April 27th! Some of the students brought in things from China. We enjoyed hearing about them, and hitting the gong! We are so grateful to the PTO for providing a trip to the Discovery Dome (from the Museum of Natural Science). It is an inflatable planetarium that allowed us to travel to the planets. The students loved it! Happy Earth Day! We discussed the importance of taking care of our planet. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Spirit Night at Spring Creek BBQ is always lots of fun. I enjoyed seeing you there, and so did my grandson! Our young STEM builders had fun with this new Lego kit!
We embarked on a Project Based Learning unit on the rainforest this week! The students loved learning about habitat & animal conservation, and did a research report. The students enjoyed the room decorations, and they especially enjoyed reading with all of the rainforest animals! These young zoologists shared their research with each other. Their paintings were amazing! We made cool binoculars and tried them out on the teacher! We shared fun facts about our animals in this adorable iMovie (look in the next post). It was a fun week! And here's a cute picture, just for fun!
Zoology is the study of animals and their behavior. Zoologists may study a particular species or group of species, either in the wild or in captivity. Zoologists study animals and their interactions with ecosystems. They study their physical characteristics, diets, behaviors, and the impacts humans have on them. (environmentalscience.org) Here are our First Grade Zoologists with some information about a rainforest animal they researched. Very impressive! USA! USA! Check out this display of our American symbols. Very patriotic! We created original flags, facts about the bald eagle, and artistic representations of the Statue of Liberty, and Uncle Sam.They enjoyed sharing their books about the National Symbols. We also finished our books about the animal groups. We learned a lot about different kinds of animals, and they definitely had some opinions about their favorites. Have you ever wondered what "lunch in the classroom", or indoor recess or math box time looks like? Take a look! After reading about historical figures, and some inventors this week, the students designed an invention. It was fun to watch them explain their creation to friends. We loved watching the eagles this week! See last week's post for the website. All three eggs have hatched, so we are enjoying the feeding show! Here is dad on a snowy morning in Iowa.
