We have been working on poetry for several weeks. Sharing our wonderful original poems with friends, parents, and Highlands' staff members was so much fun!

The Multicultural Festival is a 25-year tradition at Highlands. First Grade studies the country of China. Here are some of the crafts we made: scrolls with the animal of their birth year (according to the Chinese calendar), fish kite stories, and colorful dragons. We made Chinese tangram creations in math. We had a fun time tasting Chinese food! But first, we took our shoes off... Now, we are ready for the parade! The Festival was a blast! We also celebrated Earth Day this week and discussed ways to take care of our planet. There was a national day of celebration on Thursday called "Poem in Your Pocket" Day. We enjoyed carrying around a few poems all day in our "pockets." We also enjoyed a graphing activity with Fruit Loops. Having missed 2 days for the flood, we sure did a lot in 3 days!
We had a fun spirit night at Barnes & Noble, and several of our students read original poetry. They were terrific! We had a very busy week! We did a fun seed lab and used our scientific skills of observation. Then it was time to get ready for our earthworms! We made little "sleeping bags" and gave them some compost material to eat. The students made quite a buffet! Here come the worms! To end our unit on seeds and soil, we made some vegetable soup! It was delicious! And then......it was time to write a poem about our soup!
