We have been busy getting ready for our Thanksgiving Feast, but we also made some cool things for our hallway. We learned how to add labels to some detailed drawings. We also added details to our drawings of things you can do in the night, and during the day. To prepare for our Feast, we made headbands. Each student chose to make either a Pilgrim, or a Native American. We spoke about the importance of family, and read our original Family books to each other. Time to make the butter! We even wrote some "secret" messages using only Native American pictures. I had quite an audience while cutting up the yummy fruit! Time to feast! We explored light energy, sound energy, and heat energy this week. The flashlights were fun! We borrowed some instruments from the music teacher to test sounds. We then used random materials to create something that made a sound. We enjoyed reading our "small moment" stories to one another. We "fed" the story pieces into the Old Lady that Swallowed a Fly. We also created poetry about trees and shared our books. We prepared for Veterans Day with our Hall of Honor, and lots of artwork. We appreciate the wonderful Color Guard JROTC that joined us from Dulles High School. The program recognized all those that have served. We appreciate you! Our terrific speaker, Major Stokes, U.S. Army, Retired. Whew! After a busy week, we relaxed with popcorn and a movie (our last reward for the Fun Run).
Our week was filled with books and activities about trees. We wrote fact posters, and creative stories about a magic leaf. We did some fabulous leaf rubbings and examined the leaves on the light table. In math, we put together some challenging puzzles of a 120 chart. In Social Studies, we looked for examples of Needs & Wants in magazines. We have been learning about character traits all week with our Fun Run Boosterthon crew. Thank you to everyone that made a contribution to this fund raiser. The students earned many rewards. Here is the Neon Dance Party! Bring a stuffed animal to school! Time to get the Fun Run started! I couldn't get photos of everyone... they were running too fast! These First Graders were Rock Star athletes!
