We've been studying other countries and cultures, and enjoyed this book, Everybody Cooks Rice. We followed that discussion with some rice of our own. We used blocks one day during a math lesson to make some Tens and Ones houses. They counted how many units they used. We have some crafty builders! After our study of motion, we took lots of different objects into the hallway to see how they moved. Some went straight, some zig-zagged, some went backwards and forwards. Exploring is fun!

We've been learning so much about the Arctic and the animals that live there, and what life is like in such a cold place. Here are some of the Inuit/Eskimo people we made this week. We had our videoconference with another school this week. We each made a job for our snowman that the other class had to guess. We made a scuba diver, and they made a baker!
We also had a snow house building activity. After each group made their house, we used a hair dryer to simulate a blizzard. It was exciting to see their structures!
Wednesday was one of the greatest days of my life. My first grandchild was born! Charlie came into this world, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. He is doing very well, as are mom and dad. The students wrote lovely cards to me, and Charlie. What an excellent day!
This picture is a teacher's dream! Every student is engaged, and working together! They were creating our class snowman for a videoconference project coming up. Terrific! This week we worked on past tense verbs, adding -ed. We did some practice with a friend. We read all 10 books from the Tacky the Penguin series, and worked on the Main Idea. The students have improved so much with their retelling skills. After reading Jan Brett's The Mitten, the students made their own "mittens" and used them to retell the story with a friend.
We learned a lot about penguins this week, then the students created their favorite species. They are adorable! The Emperor penguin is the tallest penguin. It is about the size of a First-Grader, so we measured ourselves to see the comparison. Look at these scientists recording their observations! We discussed fractions this week and made "fraction pizzas", and "fractionpillars." We also began our unit on Numbers to 120. The students worked in groups to put together number puzzles and felt pretty victorious afterwards! We learned about compound words this week, and the students made these flip posters. We also enjoyed our winter discussion of snow by making some instant snow. So cool!
We spent our first week back discussing goals for the new year. Here are some of their resolutions! We spent a little time just visiting with our friends, and sharing writing pieces we've done in our Response Journals. We are back in the swing!
