Our hallway looks very patriotic! We studied symbols of the USA all week and made some excellent symbols of our own. We also learned about our national bird, the majestic bald eagle. We have been doing research on important people in history. They enjoyed sharing their information. We took advantage of beautiful weather outside to record observations about living and non-living things. We enjoyed meeting author Cathey Nickell and illustrator Bill Megenhardt, and the creator of a fantastic ART CAR! Ms. Nickell was inspired by art cars, and wrote this entertaining book. Mrs. Koski, take a picture of us and put it on the blog! We made a message for you!

We learned so much about pigs this week! These were our make-believe pigs that could do all sorts of things. The students enjoyed making up stories with their pig puppets. There was a lot of laughing when this group retold the story of the Three Little Pigs! One of our activities this week focused on what makes a healthy meal. The students created their own descriptions of a healthy meal. All week we worked on researching pigs and wrote these non-fiction books about pigs. They love to share their writing! We've been discussed the great state of Texas in Social Studies and learned that cows sometimes have a brand. Mrs. Bathe (our assistant principal) brought in her own branding iron to show the students. We were fortunate to have a special presenter this week from the Texas Wildlife Association. She brought "Skins and Skulls" to share with the students. We have been learning about how to tell time. We worked with partners to do a time game.
We enjoyed learning about legends all week. It only seemed right that we read The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors and had a contest! The class winners! We did a roll-a-story activity one day and wrote our own fairy tales. They loved sharing them! Every student did a diorama about a nursery rhyme or a favorite fairy tale character. They were incredible! Our hallway is decorated with projects following reading some of our favorite legends: The Legend of the Bluebonnet, The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, and Paul Bunyan. Open House We began the evening with a wonderful First Grade choir show! Thank you to everyone that came to our classroom and played the roll-a-story game! Friday, we made leprechaun traps! They enjoyed building them, but I think they enjoyed explaining them more! Jump Rope for Heart! Thank you for your donations to the American Heart Association for this important cause. The students had a great time and the weather cooperated! See the video below to hear all of the nursery rhyme and fairy tale reports. It's about an 8 minute video so it might take a little time to load. Enjoy! We enjoyed Dr. Seuss week with activities and reading. Check out Principal Dow as the Cat in the Hat! We focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears in our reading groups this week. Each team read a version of the story (we had 9 of them) and then reported back to the group. It was very entertaining! We have been learning about living and non-living things in Science. We set up 2 aquariums with goldfish, snails and 2 kinds of aquatic plants. We worked on student biographies this week. They loved writing about themselves! We will share with you at Open House. The weather has been gloomy! Check out our female engineers in action as we spent time inside for indoor recess. We appreciated the diversity in our classroom when writing about our families. Mrs. Dow stopped by and shared some things she had in common with our students. Our Dr. Seuss week included Wacky Wednesday, Pajama Thursday, and an assembly on Friday with the Sugar Land Skeeters. Baseball giant Deacon Jones read a story to the students.
