We used a scale to weigh our pumpkin after making an estimate on the weight. Even our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Bathe, made a guess! We used cubes to measure the height of our pumpkins after making an estimate. Time to carve the pumpkin! We observed everything, using our senses. Here is the top of the pumpkin, with the pulp and seeds attached. We counted the seeds of our pumpkin. We found 356 seeds! The students decorated their individual pumpkins. It was a fun day!

Red Ribbon Week has been exciting! We made this cool banner (with a little help from Mason's mom!) to show that we say NO to Drugs & Bullying. We were treated to a visit by Mrs. Rothberg, our Highlands Counselor. She read Bully in the Barnyard, a book that she wrote! We made a paper chain of ideas on how to deal with the issues of drugs and bullying. Ours will be joined with other classrooms to wrap the school!
Reading all of the books about fall and trees gave us inspiration to write some original poetry about trees. We had a fun time sharing our books with each other.
This week we enjoyed a technology event called "Monster Match." A few weeks ago, we teamed up with another First Grade class (at another Ft. Bend school). They made a "monster" and wrote a description of it. We used their description to create one in our classroom. Then we reversed roles, made our own "monster" and sent them our description. We had a videoconference this week to look at each other's monsters. I think both classes did a very good job of writing and interpreting! Above is their version of our green monster based on our description. Above is their original blue monster. You can look at the first picture to see how we made it.
There's always something cookin' in First Grade! We finished these fun writing projects about special people in our families. Then the spiders arrived! We learned about these arachnids and brainstormed many facts. We took time to make some silly, creative spiders, too! We added a few tear art poems to our hallway as we said HELLO to Fall! Here's the current view in our hallway. Isn't it terrific? It makes me happy when I walk by! :)
Today was the kickoff rally for Red Ribbon Week. We say NO to Bullies and Drugs! I think everyone was a little tired after all that cheering and singing!
We had so much fun this week, reading about apples and even tasting them! Thank you to the students that brought in apples to sample. After we tasted them, we used the cores to make apple stamps. The students loved making these beautiful pictures! Our Apple Week just wouldn't be complete without homemade applesauce! Check out the chefs! Sadly, I did not take any pictures of us eating the applesauce! They agreed it was delicious. Here is all that was left... :(
We had an interesting videoconference with NASA this week. We already knew that the sun was a major source of light and heat. We also learned it would take 26 years to reach the sun. The sun has sunspots and solar flares and solar wind. If you pretended the sun was a pumpkin, and you cut off the top, it would take ONE MILLION Earths to fill it up!
