We spent the day at stations with our friends, celebrating the number 100!
For President's Day, the students did these terrific drawings of Washington & Lincoln, and wrote facts about each. As we continued our unit on fairy tales, we had some pretty talented actors that performed Cinderella with their groups. The students loved drawing their own versions of Abiyoyo, the giant. In Math, we've been working with number lines, so they put together number lines to 120. On Career Day at Highlands, we were fortunate to spend some time with a NASA engineer. She showed us many features of a real astronaut spacesuit. 100th Day! We spent the day at stations with our friends, celebrating the number 100! We voted on our favorite station of the day. We even took a walk around the school, counting 100 steps from different starting points. It was a great day!

Our hallway looks awesome with stories about losing a tooth, another about a "Trek" (trip), and wishes about what we'd climb the beanstalk to get. We continued our study of fairy tales by acting out Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It was hilarious! First Grade Scientists! Several of our students completed science projects for our Highlands Science Fair & Exposition. We presented them to a very interested class of Fifth Graders. Well done! Valentine's Day in an elementary school is always great fun. We sorted and graphed candy hearts, then used them for measuring. Next, we divided up into teams to build candy heart castles. It's so exciting to hear them explain what they came up with! Time to open our valentines! The PTO provided such a nice party! The students made their own candy "robots." Cookies! Thank you PTO!
We ended our week by using windmills to test the weather outside. We finished our fun Tacky the Penguin series. We wrote letters to the author to thank her, and give her some new ideas! This week, we had a videoconference with our friends in Glacier Bay, Alaska. The park rangers took us on a virtual kayak trip to see some exciting Arctic wildlife and scenery! The students took an "oath" to be good Junior Park Rangers, and to help take care of our national parks and animals. In math, we did a skip counting activity with materials in the classroom. Some of the groups had over 500 things! We are enjoying lots of fairy tales. We made some puppets to retell the story of Little Red Riding Hood. I wish I'd recorded the reenactment of Jack and the Beanstalk. It was hilarious! We had 2 students for each part. Here are the 2 "Jacks" giving magic beans to their mothers. We've been studying weather all week. Here is an experiment to represent how rain gets heavy and falls from the clouds. They enjoyed making some puffy cloud pictures. Our Valentine's Day bags are ready! See you at the party next week!
Igloos, Arctic animals books, 3-D shapes, Tooth Fairy traps, Cafe of Learning Curriculum Night2/3/2018 We embraced the Arctic this week. Here are some of our Inuit (Eskimo) dolls, and igloos. There was excitement in the air as we built our Arctic village! Each team designed their igloo and made a team flag. A few lights made the whole scene very beautiful. We completed these original books about Arctic animals. The best part is always sharing with friends! In Math this week, we studied 3-D solid shapes. First, the students built figures with straws. Next, we searched for examples of our shapes in magazines. Going on a "Shape Walk" with our iPads was a wonderful end to the day! Each team recorded examples, and then we shared. Creating shapes with paper was the most fun of all! Another creative activity this week was building "traps" for the tooth fairy. They really used their imaginations! I love how interested they are in hearing from each team about their trap. Thanks to those that were able to make it to our Cafe of Learning on Tuesday night! We finished our classroom map this week. They added details and could have kept going on this!
