We wrapped up our pig writing pieces this week. They loved sharing their non-fiction fact books and their imaginary pig personalities. We studied Texas symbols this week and read some fiction literature: The Legend of the Bluebonnet, and The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. Here are some lovely artistic responses to the books. We spent some time doing observations with soil and seeds this week. It was pretty exciting!

We enjoyed our unit on pigs this week, learning some cool facts, along with enjoying some funny fiction literature. You'll be seeing our pigs books with expository writing soon, but we paused to have fun with our pig puppets. We even invited our nurse, Mrs. Stiver, to visit us and discuss "pigging out" on healthy food. She shared the "my plate" philosophy on eating (formerly the food pyramid), and then we played Bingo! We try to take regular "brain breaks" and get a little energy from dancing. It is fun to move around! Welcome, Spring! We had a creative time using watercolors to paint these eggs and write a poem to describe them. We did some narrative writing about a "trek", or trip, that we had taken. The students did a great job with these. We ended our week with an egg hunt! Inside the eggs were words - either nouns or verbs. The students recorded the words they found, then teamed up with a friend to record their words and write sentences. The pictures might be a bit blurry since they were moving so fast to find eggs! READY! SET! GO! We had beautiful weather Friday for our much-anticipated Jump Rope for Heart event. Highlands raised an amazing $10,042 for the American Heart Association. The students had so much fun jumping rope, dancing to the DJ, and getting some exercise! Our principal, Mrs. Dow, was out enjoying the fun as well! Here are our class winners of the jumping contest... he jumped 43 times in a row, and she jumped 44!
We've been learning about solid shapes in geometry. We used marshmallows and toothpicks to experiment with making these shapes. Here's a drawing activity we did after reading the book, Chalk. Everything they drew with chalk in the book came to life. The students had fun making some pictures of their own.
In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we celebrated the "Read Across America" event with enjoying lots of his books. We had a school-wide contest to see which class could bring in the most Dr. Seuss books. We ended up in 2nd place with 78 books! Some of the students brought a whole stack of them! We drew some Cat in the Hat pictures, too. We studied Tall Tales this week, and did some writing pieces about Paul Bunyan. Here's an experiment we did in Science with heating and cooling. We held a chocolate kiss in an open hand, and held one in a closed hand for 5 minutes to see if either one melted.
Here are some of the activities we had on display at Open House this week. These are our Fact Family Neighborhood houses. After our study of adjectives, we made these mugs of hot chocolate with describing words. The students made these cool castles and wrote about a storybook friend they'd like to have as a visitor. The students wrote some riddles about characters. The answers were behind the doors in these cottages. Before dismissal that day, we got everything ready. They were so excited to show you their work!
Here's a little video of the students with their dioramas. They turned out great! |
