We had a great week of discovery, learning how to classify and compare animals, as we continued our discussion of living and non-living things. We did some animal research in the computer lab, then did a riddle game.In math, we worked on measurement. Understanding capacity was best done with filling containers with cubes.Measuring is more fun with friends! Is slime a living or non-living thing? Our young scientists had fun figuring it out! We assessed our knowledge of animal groups by having an egg hunt! After collecting the eggs, the students sorted the animal names into groups. We are official "eagle watchers" now, as we wait for these beautiful bald eagles to welcome their young eaglets. This awesome nest is in a tree in Decorah, Iowa, and is equipped with hidden cameras. We loved all the pig books we read this week. We worked in reading groups to explore different versions of the classic tale, The Three Little Pigs. We wrote our own books this week with facts and opinions about pigs. We love to share! MEASUREMENT This week, we focused on non-standard measurement using a variety of things. We even measured our feet against an outline of NBA legend, Shaquille O'Neal's large foot! In Science, we have been studying living and non-living things. We took a nature walk to record examples of each. We must pause this nature walk for a little playground time! We finished our week with a discussion about healthy eating. We invited our school nurse to join us, and she loved the Healthy Meal posters!
We finished several units this week, as we prepared for Open House and Spring Break. We finished our Object in the Sky unit with a little taste test, just like we were astronauts. We put a little water on our "freeze dried ice cream" and enjoyed the experiment! We stared at the ceiling after the "star machine" created costellations. We had fun with some legends and Tall Tales this week. We wrote about Paul Bunyan, and painted Texas sunsets after reading The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. We read The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors just for fun, then had a class tournament. These were the final two competitors! We wrapped up our study of fairy tales with these amazing castles! Each student wrote a biography this week. Their books featured a familiar character. Sharing is always the best part! Leprechaun traps were the order of the day after reading this book. We had a blast, jumping for an hour during our fundraiser. Thank you to everyone that donated! And just like that...we are off to Spring Break! Yahoo! I have Scottie this week, so here's a sneak peek at our first fun activity -- THE RODEO! The next post you see below is our "sideways" video of all students showing their dioramas. It's adorable, so take a look!
Well...the best laid plans.... I forgot to turn my phone to "landscape" while filming these adorable children. This resulted in a "sideways" movie that I am unable to straighten. I showed the students and asked them if they thought I should post it, and they answered, "yes!" So, here it is, sideways and all. So sorry! We've been studying weather and the seasons. We also know that an author sometimes writes to persuade someone else. We combined these concepts to convince our classmates about which season is the best. We put all of our planets in order! In math, we practiced ordering 3 numbers. It was our week to do the pledges on the morning announcements. The Scottie News Network was looking pretty good! Field Trip! We got our final instructions before enjoying all of the fun activities at the Children's Museum. Thank you, chaperones, for going with us! Then we were off to the park while I still had a teeny bit of battery life in my phone! Read Across America Day & Dr. Seuss's Birthday! Our principal, Mrs. Dow, came by to thank the students for their wonderful letters. One of their homework assignments was to write a letter to her, telling her what we like about Highlands. She LOVED them! Our special guest reader was Andre Ware, a Heisman Trophy winner (1989) for the University of Houston. We even practiced the "Heisman pose" before the assembly. GO COOGS!
