We had so much fun on Poem in Your Pocket Day! It is a National Day designed to just enjoy poetry by sharing a poem from your pocket. They wore their "pockets" like necklaces, and shared with friends. Check out the smiles! And now...here's an iMovie of a few poetry readings!

It's a redworm! The students squealed and giggled as they held these wiggly creatures. We made compost bags, and then tucked them neatly into our "Worm Hotel." We'll check on them periodically for growth. First, we prepared compost bags with bits of fruits and vegetables. Then, we observed our redworms and gave them a new temporary home in the bags. Now, they are resting and feasting in the Worm Hotel! We have begun our soil and plants unit. We observed some of the components of soil: sand, clay, and humus. We've been reading about living things, and observing seeds. We soaked some lima beans for a day, and then discovered how easy it was to see the seed coat, embryo, and food storage. If you ask the students, one of their favorite things is Flashlight Friday! They take their familiar books and a flashlight and can sit anywhere in the room. Then, it's lights out! It is a great way to create a little excitement about reading, while working on our fluency. Reading with a partner is especially fun.
