For Brown Day, we read a lovely book, The Colors of Us. We discussed the different skin tones and colors in our classroom and how we are all different shades of brown. Each student did a self-portrait. I think these pictures are just precious!

After reading The Moonglow Roll-O-Rama, where the animals skate in the heavens at night, we made our own "moonglow" settings. Their animals were so cute! We've been working on addition in Math. After reviewing how to make 10 on a ten-frame, we came up with these sticker stories. What are some sources of light? I'll bet your first-grader can tell you quite a few. We did a fun science activity with individual flashlights to see the power of light. They made shadow puppets on the board, and made their own "light shows" to enjoy. It was quite a sight!
We had a fun time with our carrots on Friday. We did a lot of things that scientists would do. We weighed them, measured them against other carrots, observed them, learned about the carrot life cycle, and even used them to do some non-standard measuring. They really enjoyed measuring each other! Each classroom had a class winner for Longest Carrot, Shortest Carrot, Biggest Carrot, and Funniest Carrot. The classroom winners competed for the overall winners in First Grade.
We used our senses with our latest Science activity. Students observed the brown powder in their cups, and made predictions about what it could be based on what they could see, hear, smell and feel. We added a touch of milk, and voila! Chocolate pudding!
These interesting thinking maps show what each child likes to do, eat, etc. It was fun reading about their favorites! I just had to add this photo of the Jenga tower built by these very determined boys!
