We have been learning about a lot of important people in history. The students have been doing their own research and adding facts. We had a fun partner activity this week in math, and determined which number was greater, and which was less. Recess Fun! We had a fantastic trip to the Children's Museum for our Field Trip. Lots of smiles! Even our wonderful chaperones joined in the fun! Time to head to the park! My big book stand lost a wheel this week, so Mr. Koski brought in his tools to fix it. The students thought that was so interesting!

The Valentine pouches were stuffed and ready for us to enjoy! First, we did some measuring and writing activities. We did a little building competition with our candy hearts. Time to open the valentines and have a party! We had fun playing Huckle Buckle Valentine. We continued our Fairy Tale unit, acting out the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. There are so many different variations of this story! Working in groups, we identified the main idea in each story. In Science, we did a few activities involving force and motion. We compared the time required to run, hop, skip, crab walk and more. We learned about ramps and acceleration. We worked in teams to build ramps and test the cars. We also tested the force of magnets, and determined which materials would attach to a magnet.
This week we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Highlands Elementary. It was exciting to think about all the Scotties that have passed through these hallways. The school was beautifully decorated, and we had a parade on Thursday to view everything. That night, we had a wonderful program and many former Scotties (students and teachers) returned to celebrate! Pictured below L to R: Mr. Bellard (former Asst. Principal), Mrs. Dow (current Principal), Dr. Bogle (former Principal), Ms. Kulpinsky (former Principal), Ms. Thompson (former Asst. Principal), Dr. Villarreal (Asst. Superintendent), Mrs. Bathe (current Asst. Principal), Dr. Dupre (FBISD Superintendent)We began our Nursery Rhyme and Fairy Tale unit this week. We have a lovely storybook mural, complete with characters that the students created. After reading Little Red Riding Hood, the students enjoyed retelling the story with these finger puppets. It was fun to watch our class say the pledges on announcements this week! We studied Force & Motion this week in Science and experimented with rolling cars in the hallway, and on the carpet in the room. We enjoyed a performance of "How I Became a Pirate" by the group from Main Street Theater. The students loved all the live action! We ended our week with an exciting Skype conference with a well-known author, Tricia Brown. She has written more than twenty-five books, mostly about Alaska. She spoke to us on a snowy day from Anchorage, Alaska. She read her book, taught us some "Eskimo" words, and even tried on her parka (with wolf trim) for us.
We wrapped up our interesting study of the Arctic with sharing our books about some special animals. Book Trailers! We did a little different style of reading groups this week. The students worked in teams to develop a performance to convince their classmates to read the book. Some chose to act it out, some drew pictures, some told a story. It was fun! Lights! Camera! Action! Technology Toys Our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Sanchez, brought some Bee-Bots for our class to try. They are programmable robots. The students enjoyed trying their coding skills. Our newest classroom toy, Osmo, created a lot of excitement! Groundhogs and Dental Health We learned a lot about our furry friends on Groundhog Day. Aren't these a charming bunch? The students wrote about a time they lost a tooth. Their stories were entertaining! We finally finished the 10th book in the Tacky the Penguin series. They loved all of them! Hang on to your hats.... it's time to share some pictures of our 100th day of First Grade! The students rotated through centers, focusing on the number 100. We got a jump start on 100th day, by taking 100 steps from different places in the school. They recorded their measurement results.
