So, our experiment involved highlighter markers, eggs, and vinegar. We hoped the end result would be eggs that glowed and bounced. We created our mixture and gently placed the raw eggs inside. Then, we waited for 3 days. The students observed that the eggshells began to bubble almost immediately. After 3 days, the eggs were huge! They discovered that the shells were gone, and the highlighter ink made its way through the egg membrane. We put the eggs under a black light, and discovered that they GLOWED! We went outside to test their ability to bounce. The egg failed from about 4 feet, but we found success from about 2 feet. Cool experiment! This week we learned about tide pools, and created some of our own, along with an ocean in a bottle. We reflected on our fantastic year and shared some memories. Field Day! ...the photo bombers were everywhere... First Grade Friends! Waiting to take a picture of all the Scotties... Time to get some lunch! We enjoyed a high energy hip hop dance program. Field Day was great fun! Time to relax with popcorn and a movie...

After reading one of my favorite books, The Rainbow Fish, we enjoyed a little creative storytelling. This shopping game allowed us to practice adding coin values together. When we make choices during math box free time, it pretty much looks like this! We had a cool videoconference this week with the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Florida. Our excellent presenter read a book, Smiley Shark, and then introduced us to many different shark species and facts. We worked all week on these ocean books. We learned a lot of facts, and had fun sharing. We were honored to present our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Sanchez, with a book of letters and paintings done by the students. She will be leaving Highlands this year. We love you! Coming next week...
We began a science experiment on Friday. We recorded our materials, the process so far, what we've observed, and our predictions. Hmmm, what will happen? This week, we have enjoyed all sorts of books and videos about the ocean. It is an amazing habitat to study! It's always fun to share our ideas. We made our own wishes after reading The Magic Fish. We enjoyed seeing some of the sea animals up close, like this giant sea turtle! After reading Eric Carle's wonderful book, we made some "new shells" of our own. Everyone is heading to Second Grade! We've been studying money all week. Some of the students brought in their own coins for us to observe. We created our own special quarters and had a guessing game to figure out the artists! Mrs. Bathe gave calculators to the students, so we learned a little about them, and tried some math problems. We ended the week with a visit from Toro, the mascot for the Houston Texans. He spoke about getting fit through exercise and good food choices. We even visited with JJ Watt through a phone chat. Here's another Family Fun Night shout out to these creative students and their lemonade stand. Proceeds were donated to our Highlands PTO!
As our rainforest unit came to a close, we focused on completing our poetry books in preparation for the Poetry Party. Each student ended up with about 20 original poems. Fantastic! We practiced reading our poems to each other. Then, we got ready to head to 4th grade to read to students in Mrs. Culberson's class. I was happy to see some former students! We later sent Mrs. Culberson's class a thank you note, along with some encouragement for STAAR testing. It's finally time to welcome our guests to the Poetry Party! It was great to have such an interested audience! Thank you for coming. :) We were happy that some of the Highlands staff could join us. Even Mr. Koski and my daughter showed up to read with students. Finally, it's time to dig into those snacks! Another big activity this week was our Texas Readers celebration. We began the day with an awesome magician. Later, we had popsicles and bubbles.
Whew, what a week! |
