After reviewing goods and services, we created our own "Scottie's Neighborhood" with lots of businesses. We played a guessing game with different jobs. In our study of Natural Resources, we observed soil. We learned about the importance of soil in our universe. In our Soil Lab, we learned that clay, sand, and humus are important components of soil. From soil, we transitioned to an exciting Rock Lab. Rocks are also an important Natural Resource, and are used for many things in our world. They loved seeing my collection! We have been learning about different Holidays Around the World. We were so happy to welcome our wonderful counselor, Mrs. Rothberg, who shared some Hanukkah stories and menorahs. She brought some Hanukkah gelt (chocolate coins) to the students, and let us borrow her dreidels for some fun. We learned that in the Philippines, they carry ornamental star-shaped Christmas lanterns, called "parols." In Holland, the children leave out wooden shoes at Christmas, to be filled with treats. It was challenging to walk in them! We've enjoyed a lot of holiday literature. After reading this book, we decided to do a little STEM challenge, and create ELF TRAPS. Students chose their groups, and the ideas were popping! An important part of the process was explaining their ideas to their classmates. Everyone was super interested! One of our popular math box choices has been "build a tree." So creative! One of our math games this week involved adding 3 numbers. In math, we also discussed symmetry, and made some awesome snowflakes. They were even more fun, since we saw real snow last week! We continue to discuss the concept of Gratitude. I enjoyed reading their stories of putting a bow on something to give thanks. Take a look at the video below if you haven't seen it.
